is the former capital of Menorca and is a delightful blend of grand tradition and quaint charm. Ciutadella harbour doesn’t have the same scale as Mahon harbour, but it more than makes up for this with its charming array of fishing boats, yachts and motor cruisers moored along both sides. Oh – and it doesn’t have a huge great power station stuck at the far end!

I first visited Ciutadella on my first visit to Menorca 20 years ago. I remember in particular taking a snap of my daughter on my then state of the art autofocus Pentax camera, which I later scanned into my “state of the art” Mac IIcx computer and digitally enhanced in some new software called Photoshop to become a painting of her walking down the steps to the jetty. I still remember her bright green tea shirt dress as vividly as if it were yesterday!

I’ve been back to Ciutadella half a dozen times since then with a variety of guests whom we’ve had to stay with us. Without exception all our visitors have agreed the hour long drive to Ciutadella from Binibeca has been well worth taking. None could put their finger on just exactly what it was, maybe the charm, maybe the history, possibly even the splendour of some of the magnificent buildings. The thing I noticed was that everyone seemed to walk just that little bit slower! Everyone was seeming to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the view, whether it was the harbour, the buildings in the ancient part of the town, or just the shops and restaurants.

I definitely agree with other reviews of Ciutadella that I have read, Ciutadella is unique!

For night life, Ciutadella compares very well with Mahon, having numerous music bars and a great selection of cafes and restaurants. Ciutadella is known worldwide as one of Spain’s most beautiful cities – not bad for a city on a tiny 39 mile island! Now I am not a great one for visiting Churches and Cathedrals, but I have to say I could happily wander around Ciutadella’s old town for days and I would certainly not miss that leisurely stroll along the harbour for any other place on the island. If you do decide to take that wander around the old town, you cannot get lost as the area is bounded by the harbour at one end and a tree lined dual carriageway on the other three sides.

Places you must visit when you visit Ciutadella:

Placa des Born – is a great square, equal in stature to many of the great European squares, although some of its magnificence does become a little obscured by the leafy trees later in the season. The town hall was originally a royal palace and the huge buildings lining the square were all build in a very grand style by wealthy landowners of the day. Walk through the Calle Major d’es Born to access the pedestrian area of the old city. Head for the Placa de la Catedral to enjoy the Cathedral area. There’s a tourist office situsted right by the tiwn hall and you can get a local map here, highlighting the best places to visit.

Ses Voltes are the mediaeval arcades with lots of quaint cafes and clothes shops, some quite glamorous and also some quite pricey!

The Harbour. I love walking about the harbour, studying the variety and sizes of the many boats moored there. You can always get a decent meal or just stop off in one of th emany cafes for a coffee, or something a little stronger and simply watch the world go by.

Open Air Markets every day in the Plaza del Mercat and Friday and Saturday markets Plaza Es Born. Generally the markets start quite early in the morning and begin to break up by about 2 in the afternoon. The markets in Ciutadella were established in the 1300′s by Jaime II as part of the Christian conquest of the island.

Ciutadella

Los Delfines is an amalgamation of several smaller resorts, Cala en Blanes, Cala en Bruc, Cala ‘n Forcat and Los Delfines  to form the are known collectively as Los Delfines. The several beaches are all interlinked and it is quite easy to walk from one mini resort to another as the whole area is relatively small.

Although the Los Delfines area is  quite developed compared to many areas of the island, most holiday villas in the resort are in residential areas and so you get a cosmopolitan feel, without the usual accompanying noise and hubbub. There are also holiday hotels and apartments but again these are well spread amongst the resorts and are not overpowering as a result.

We’ve visited the beaches and amenities of the Los Delfines area several times during our many visits to Menorca, generally with the intention of wiling away a few hours at the water park, but inevitably we’ve wandered around the numerous tourist shops, bars and restaurants. The water park itself has catering facilities and for children the catering is ideal, as it allows the minimum separation from the amusements, of which there are many – when we last visited with young teenagers, these included pool, trampolining, go karts and of course the water park itself.

Cala en Blanes is the largest of these small beaches and lies towards the eastern edge of the resort. With its two beach bars /cafe bars, Cala en Blanes can become quite busy as most high season holidaymakers here will find the other two beaches a little claustrophobic.

Cala en Forcat is situated on a long finger like inlet at the Western end of the resort with a small sandy area to the back. Sunbathing platforms alleviate the crush a little, but many find they need to explore a little further afield using the bus service or the resort train in high season. Don’t forget to take plenty to drink and remember there are no beach facilities here, although there are facilities within easy walking distance.

Calas Piques is tucked away to the western edge of Los Delfines resort and if undiscovered by the masses might offer a little more peace and quiet. Again, no facilities here.

Cala en Bruc lies in the middle of Los Delfines resort and although having no beach, it does have a series of well arranged sunbathing platforms.

Los Delfines

is situated in the centre of Menorca’s South coast, approximately 35 – 40 minutes drive from Mahon Airport. Nowhere takes very long to get to on Menorca and owing to its very central location, even Cuitadella is just 40 minutes away, with Mahon harbour being within easy reach, but also about 45 minutes drive.

Santo Tomas is one of Menorca’s more “traditional” holiday resorts, having been built before the stricter planning controls were imposed on the island’s developers and as a result Santo Tomas has more of a feel of Majorca about it than many of the more sympathetically developed resorts on the island, with seven quite large hotels offering reasonably priced package holidays.

Whilst some may regard these hotels in Santo Tomas as a bit of an eyesore, the upside is that they do offer the opportunity to holiday on Menorca relatively cheaply. Also the concentration of hotels around Santo Tomas makes for plenty of evening entertainment for adults, as well as entertainment and kids clubs for the younger ones, so there is no excuse for them being bored! Since there is only one road into Santo Tomas and so in general there are only holidaymakers staying at Santo Tomas plus one or two residents. It isn’t a destination for daytrippers.

Out of the holiday season, Santo Tomas is all but a ghost-town!

Santo Tomas Amenities

Santo Tomas has a selection of what I would call “tourist shops”, as well as two quite reasonable sized supermarkets and two bakers. There are car rental offices as well as cash machines, tennis courts, pony trekking and even mini golf. For the smaller children there are a couple of climbing frames, swings and every earklly evening a kids mini disco at Las Dunas Hotel. I seem to remember when I stayed at The Lord Nelson at Santo Tomas, my daughter, then 6, was press ganged into the tigers club – at least I thing that was what it was called, which menat my wife and I could have a quiet mooch about the shops doing “boring” stuff knowing she was well taken care of.

There are two splendid beaches at Santo Tomas, separated by a rock headland which is home to The Hotel Sol. San Adeodata is the western beach here and home to quite a few villas occupying the front line overlooking the thin sandy beach. To the east the beach is overlooked by the hotels and although deeper and a little wider, San Adeodata was worth the walk from the hotel.

Even further west lies Playa de Binigaus, undeveloped and often occupied (although not exclusively) by nudists. Of the three beaches, this is the most remote and least spoiled as a result.

Santo Tomas does have some quite strong currents, so keep a watchful eye on the flags and the kids.

Santo Tomas Holiday Tip

Santo Tomas does have everything you need for a most enjoyable holiday with small children (up yo 10 years I would say) and if you are on a package tour, there is plenty to keep adults and children amused. If you do fancy exploring a little further afield, hiring a car for a day is well worth the expense, as most places worth visiting are easily within an hour’s drive. If you are hiring a car in the height of the season, preb-ooking might be an idea and air conditioning is a must!

Planning a Holiday to Menorca

So you’ve decided that you want to holiday in the Balearic Islands of Spain. Why would you choose Menorca over Majorca or Ibiza? Now that’s an easy choice if you know the other two islands already. But if you don’t and you are still intent on planning a holiday to Menorca, I’ll make a couple of suggestions for you based on my experience of all 3.

Ibiza is great fun for teenagers and very early 20′s youngsters. Lots of partying, clubs and plenty of holidays geared to that kind of fun-loving age group. Also not too expensive and lots of affordable hotels.

Majorca is a bit like a grown-up’s Ibiza. A little slower in pace but plenty of night life and certainly lots of history as well as loads of things to do in the evenings as well as during the day. Majorca is less expensive than Menorca, although it has to be said that prices across the islands have leveled out over the last few years. Let’s face it, any European holiday is going to be more expensive with the state of the Pound currently.

Menorca is a smaller quieter more family orientated island altogether. Better suited for relaxing than for partying and certainly suited to families with young children, even babies. There are less hotels on Menorca than the other two islands and not just because it’s smaller, the hotels are less densely spread about the island and in my view, they are not so huge and unsightly as on Ibiza and Majorca, but again that’s not to say that there aren’t some monstrosities. Generally Menorca hotels are more sympathetically designed and in keeping with their surroundings.

If you’re planning a holiday to Menorca, budget will be a major consideration. If you have a generous budget, you can decide which type of holiday based purely on your preferences. Many people with families choose self catering, either in a villa, a farmhouse or an apartment. However, a resort holiday in a nice hotel can be a better choice if you have younger children who need lots to occupy them. Equally, some of the nicer hotels on the island are quite luxurious and suitable if you decide you want to pamper yourselves.

Whenever I’ve been planning a holiday to Menorca, my preference has always been  a private villa, as I am not that sociable and I really don’t like crowds. That being said, we’ve generally managed a day or two on the beach, even when we’ve had our own villa and pool. If you’re planning a holiday to Menorca including children, my experience is that a holiday with happy children tends to mean a happy holiday for everyone.
