Villa Mariposa, Es Grau
It was the Villa Mariposa, Es Grau, that started us out on our search for a holiday villa to buy in Menorca. Owned by friends, we were invited out there at a time when they were considering selling, as they were in the process of having another much grander villa built at Cala Llonga, overlooking Mahon harbour. Set in glorious rolling hills that make up Menorca’s biosphere natural park, peace and tranquility abound and we immediately said we were interested and began making plans for buying our very own Menorcan Villa.
As it turned out, our friends decided that they too loved the villa and that they could not bear to be parted from it and that they were not going to sell. We didn’t mind too much as we quite liked the idea of hunting down our own little piece of this island paradise and made plans to come back later in the year to start our search!
Now that they have retired and having sold the Cala Llonga property, our friends do spend quite a lot of the summer at Villa Mariposa, Es Grau, but when they aren’t there, they let it out through owners direct. If you are interested in renting this beautiful villa, contact details are at the bottom of the page. I’ve also included a selection of pictures of the villa which will give you an idea of what attracted us to it in the first place.
Although listed as Villa Mariposa, Es Grau, the villa is more accurately described as being situated in the Shangri La development at S’Albufera. There’s a very good reason why there is so much peace and tranquility. Originally built in the 1970′s as part of a development scheduled to include over 100 villas, the developer was (so local legend has it) discredited and not permitted to complete the development. In fact, quite a few villas that were close to the lake that is at the heart of the park were actually pulled down in an attempt to reinforce the ruling that this should be a nature reserve and not a holiday resort. The end result? Around 30 villas spaced out in an area easily capable of supporting well over 100, hence the tranquility and seclusion.
Here are a few pictures of Villa Mariposa, Es Grau. The local cafe at Es Grau beach does a superb breakfast and the water around Es Grau is beautifully shallow, warm and teeming with fish. For a quiet get away from it all family holiday in a beautiful setting away from the hustle and bustle, but near enough to the capital, when you want some night life or shopping, we don’t think you can beat Villa Mariposa, Es Grau.
